DDP Shipping Explained: The Stress-Free Way to Import Your Clothing Line

The first time a new brand imports a production run, the garments are rarely the hard part — the paperwork is. Freight bookings, customs brokers, HS codes, import duties, terminal handling charges: a first-time importer can easily lose two weeks and several hundred dollars to surprises that had nothing to do with the clothes themselves.

It all comes down to the shipping term on your invoice. FOB — Free On Board — means the factory's responsibility ends when your cartons are loaded at the port in the origin country. Everything after that is yours: ocean or air freight, insurance, customs clearance in your country, import duty, taxes, and the truck to your door. FOB pricing looks cheaper on the quote because it quietly excludes all of that.

DDP — Delivered Duty Paid — is the opposite arrangement. The factory quotes one price that includes production, export documentation, international freight, customs clearance on your side, import duties and taxes, and final delivery to your address. You receive one invoice, and then you receive your boxes. There is no customs broker to hire, no duty bill arriving mid-shipment, no cargo sitting at a port accruing storage fees while paperwork gets sorted.

For small and mid-size brands, we recommend DDP for three practical reasons. First, cost certainty: your landed cost per garment is known before you confirm the order, which means you can set retail prices with real margins instead of estimates. Second, time: you skip the learning curve of freight forwarding entirely and stay focused on selling. Third, risk: the party responsible for the shipment is the party who packed it — if something goes wrong in transit or clearance, it is our problem to fix, not yours.

When does FOB make sense? Once your volumes grow to full containers, or you have your own freight forwarder and customs bond, taking control of logistics can shave a few points off landed cost. Established brands with import infrastructure often prefer it. But for a 50-to-1,000-piece order, the money saved rarely covers the hours spent — and one customs mistake can erase the difference several times over.
